On January 4th of 2019, a photo was posted on Instagram with a caption that read, "
Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this 🙌". This photo was posted by account "world_record_egg", and the main reason for this account's creation was to surpass Kylie Jenner's record of the most liked photo on Instagram.

Instagram users across the world accepted this challenge, and it went viral. The photo then began
to gain millions of likes and as of right now it currently has 53.4 million likes. This created lots of talk from radio shows, to celebrities commenting about it, to even your local news. As of today, the account holds 8.7 million followers and counting. After becoming the title holder of "most liked photo on Instagram", they posted on their story that this was only the beginning of their account, and they will use it for other egg-related usages.

Kylie's response to this situation was quite comedic, as she posted on her account a video of her cooking an egg out into the sun. Kylie's response. Days later, the photo was updated on Wikipedia's page of the most liked Instagram photos, and was accurately updated day by day. As a spectator, I actually found this very humorous because no one actually believed that this would succeed, especially me. And I just find it amazing how we can accomplish tasks like this on Social Media within a short period of time, causing it o go viral.
All in all, I think that this could've been a perfect way to spread information on Climate Change due to all the buzz surrounding it, but it didn't really happen. I think that if 53.4 million of us are willing to like a photo to beat Kylie Jenner, we should be willing to try and help save our earth by completing even the littlest of tasks.
I saw this post on social media many times and people continued to share it to get more and more likes. I honestly didn't know the purpose of making an egg photo go viral. After reading your post, I want to say that I strongly agree with your idea. The idea of this egg post is quite humorous, but if it was used to spread information about climate change then people would be more aware. This egg photo can tell others about how Chickens are threatened by climate change.
ReplyDeleteThis egg phenomenon was everywhere, on my explore page, on my timeline, it was even everywhere on Twitter. People honestly have such little to do with their lives nowadays that they go outto make the most liked instagram picture an egg. I found it insane how the egg had so much popularity, my teachers, my parents, they were all talking about it. Personally, I agree with your statement completely, if only we could gain as much insight about climate change, at the rate of that egg. We should at the very least try to protect the only earth we'll ever have. With the power of social media, we could raise awareness for literally everything the only problem is that we don’t try hard enough. There are some posts to help the well-being of the planet here and there but they aren’t constantly being shared enough to be viral. If we had that kind of viral effect with the struggles of our earth, we could honestly make a difference.
ReplyDeleteThis post was all over my timeline when it was at its peak. It is crazy to think that an image of an egg has surpassed Kylie Jenner for the most liked post on Instagram. I totally agree on your take of how over 50 million people like and image of an egg, just so it can surpass Kylie Jenner was petty, and that it could have been used for a good cause. If we had that kind of publicity on real world issues, the world can defiantly benefit from that and we can make a huge difference. Overall I really enjoyed reading this blog.
ReplyDeleteI agree Hosi, this egg blew with no caution. People are so desperate for likes and not what is currently happening right now in the world we live in. I feel as if we should start looking at the reality and not basing of something with likes. If we can help the egg could get over 20 million likes, why can't we help people in need. It is truly disgusting how our society is turning into a crucial world.
